Casting News: Matthew Rhys and Anna Maxwell Martin to play Darcy & Elizabeth in BBC1's 3-part murder-mystery 'Death Comes To Pemberley'

The casting for Darcy, Elizabeth, Wickham in the upcoming BBC1's 3-part murder-mystery TV mini-series, Death Comes to Pemberley has just been announced and released. According to Deadline, Matthew Rhys (who co-starred with Keira Knightley in The Edge of Love film) and Anna Maxwell Martin (who co-starred with Carey Mulligan in Bleak House, with Penelope Wilton on South Riding, and sister to Anne Hathaway's Jane Austen in Becoming Jane) has been cast to play Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth (Bennet) Darcy. Matthew Goode (who co-starred with Penelope Wilton in Matchpoint and Claudie Blakley in He Knew He Was Right) will play Mr. Wickham.

As previously posted here, it was reported in various media that former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens was rumored to play Mr. Darcy in Death Comes to Pemberley. Of course, that was just a rumor because now with newly reported casting news, it turns out another Matthew is playing Mr. Darcy...well, Matthew Rhys, that is...and another named Matthew (Goode) playing Mr. Wickham...interesting! I wonder who will play Lydia Bennet.

What do you think of the Darcy/Elizabeth/Wickham Death Comes to Pemberley casting? Yay or nay?

Filming for Death Comes to Pemberley is said to begin in June in Yorkshire, England (UK), according to UK's Mirror.

Matthew Rhys To Play Mr. Darcy In BBC’s ‘Death Comes To Pemberley’

This year is the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice. To mark the occasion, the BBC is prepping three-part serial Death Comes To Pemberley, based on the suspense novel/homage by crime writer P.D. James. The book centers on three of Austen’s most iconic characters: Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy and George Wickham. The AmericansMatthew Rhys will play Darcy, Anna Maxwell Martin (who was Cassandra Austen in Becoming Jane) is Elizabeth and Matthew Goode is Wickham. The story picks up six years into Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage as they prepare for the annual ball at their magnificent Pemberley home. When Elizabeth’s wayward sister Lydia arrives, she brings a shocking halt to the proceedings. A murder investigation unfolds and a web of secrets and deceit threatens all that the Darcys hold dear. Juliette Towhidi (Calendar Girls) did the adaptation which will be directed by Daniel Percival (Crossing Lines).

Rhys said, “Exciting as it is, one of the challenges of a part such as Darcy are the comparisons that will be drawn to those who’ve institutionalized him in the past. The beauty of Pemberly is that it is an entirely new and different Darcy 6 years on.” Referring to what’s been called one of the most unforgettable moments in British TV history when Firth’s Darcy went for a swim in Pride And Prejudice, Rhys added, “And also, I don’t have to appear from a lake in a white shirt and breeches.”  Read full Deadline article here.

  1. Anna Maxwell Martin is an interesting actress to watch work. However, she is not JA's Elizabeth Bennet in appearance (second in beauty to her sister Jane, pretty) or in affect (vivacious). I believe Martin has been miscast. Her persona is typically subdued. I have never seen evidence she could engage a room with her personality.
